February is finally here which means the rumors are flying as the NBA trade deadline draws near. According to Sean Deveney, one interesting rumor came to light couple of days ago with the Orlando Magic looking to move the big man Serge Ibaka. By putting Serge on the trade block it has opened the door for the Nuggets to potentially trade for the 6’10” power forward.
This trade gives both teams assets that will help both Denver and Orlando in the long run. Now hear me out, I know it looks like Denver is giving up a lot just for a player that could potentially walk at the end of the season. However In my mind, the only way this trade would work is if Ibaka commits on signing a long-term deal with the Nuggets.
How this Trade Helps Denver:
As a Nuggets fan it’s hard to see Will Barton leave the team. With being a potential 6th man of the year last year, and the spark he can be off the bench he will sorely be missed. However with his departure it will help shed a bright light on the rookie Jamal Murray. Murray will obviously see an increase in minutes, which would be great in helping his development, and will let the young man show off his scoring potential like we’ve already seen this season. Next Ibaka who’s averaging 15 PPG, 6.8 RPG, and 1.6 BPG would be able to come in and make a huge difference right away for Denver. His defense and the ability to stretch the floor would work wonders for the Nuggets. Imagine the duo of Nikola Jokic and Serge as the front court. Those two could help Denver secure that final spot in the playoffs in the Western Conference. Last but not least we would welcome DJ Augustin back to the Pepsi Center. Last year the Nuggets traded for him at deadline, and DJ helped provide a decent back up point guard for the Nuggets. He played big in big time moments, and honestly I was hoping Denver would have resigned him this last off-season. With the rumors flying around Jameer Nelson this would help fortified the point guard position.
How this Trade Helps Orlando:
Sadly the experiment with Ibaka for Orlando hasn’t worked out. With trading away Victor Oladipo to OKC in the 2016 draft I’m sure the Magic wanted Serge to be the cornerstone of their franchise for years to come. However with the season being a disappointment, and it looking like Ibaka wanting to walk at the end of the season this trade gives Orlando some young talent, and a first round pick to work with. This trade doesn’t completely blow up the Magic team, and could help them take the right step next year. Will Barton could possibly play the same role he does for the Nuggets. He could be that main player who comes off the bench, and provides that spark to get the second unit going. He could even possibly start if needed like we’ve seen him do for the Nuggets. Plus he’s under a very cap friendly contract which makes the deal even sweater. Next with Nurkic the Magic would be getting a young big center who they could possible build with for years to come. However, Orlando does already have two centers in Nikola Vučević, and the recently signed Bismack Biyombo. This could cause conflict at this position, but Nikola could very well be traded this off-season or at the deadline. Even with Biyombo they could possibly move him to power forward, and he could still play center if needed. Finally with the Memphis first round pick they could pick up young prospect to go along with an already pretty young team.
This trade would get a lot of Denver fans excited, and could possibly help Denver find that last piece to the puzzle to help jump this team to the next level in the NBA!
