In the second night of a back-to-back, the Nuggets were hoping to come back from their loss against the Lakers. Instead, they were absolutely mauled by the Memphis Grizzlies as they fell 119-99. As you would expect (though it’s never an excuse), the Nuggets would be exhausted from traveling to LA, playing a late game, and then getting back to the Mile High City VERY early this morning, but it wasn’t expected that the Nuggets lineup would start falling off due to injury.
Last Thursday, Nikola Jokic went down on the court against the Suns. We’re now sitting at the third game in a row without the Joker. Will Barton did not play tonight because of an ankle injury. Emmanuel Mudiay came back tonight with a 20 minute restriction–he played 26 minutes. Danilo Gallinari left in the 3rd quarter to the locker room with a left groin strain. Oh, let’s not forget to mention that three minutes into the 1st, Nuggets veteran PG Jameer Nelson received a double technical and was then ejected from the game for nagging the official after being subbed out.
The Nuggets started out cold in the Mile High City for their first game of the month when they were outscored in the first, 27-18. As if that weren’t enough to get the Nuggets moving, they were once again outscored in the second, 35-31. As they went into the locker room at the half, the Nuggets were trailing the Grizzlies 62-49. This should’ve been a turning point for the Nuggets to come out fighting in the second half because the Grizzlies are a team that averages 102 points per game. Instead, the Nuggets were outscored 25-20 in the 3rd, and then 32-30 in the fourth.
There were just far too many fundamental errors tonight and far too many turnovers. Passes weren’t going where they were intended to go and everything was just looking flat out messy. It was just an all around bad night for the Nuggets between injuries, lack of defense, and all around lack of playing true Denver Nuggets basketball.
“It’s 80% mental, 20% physical.” –Darrell Arthur [on the back-to-back loss]
The Nuggets’ schedule doesn’t get any easier from here and they know it. They’re scheduled to play Milwaukee on Friday at home and then San Antonio on Saturday night.
Danilo Gallinari is scheduled to undergo an MRI tomorrow morning.
