The Denver Nuggets currently have 8 players on their roster that are under the age of 25. They selected three players in the first round of this past year’s NBA draft. If the Nuggets are going to make a trade, then it should be for a seasoned veteran that can come in and contribute right away. The Nuggets should not only dangle Nurkic, but also the upcoming draft picks they have in the 2017 NBA draft. The Nuggets are still in search for a go-to guy, even though Gallinari has been the one to take on that role. They already have a huge building block in Nikola Jokic. There is absolutely no need for this team to get younger than it already is. Adding more young players will only stunt the growth and playing time of the young players already on the team fighting for minutes. This includes players like Malik Beasley and Juancho Hernangomez who desperately need to see the court in order to gain the experience. The last thing you want is for them to fight for playing time with first round selections in next year’s draft.
Paul Millsap is a player that the Nuggets definitely missed out on. He would have paired very nicely next to Jokic, and he would have added versatility on both ends of the court. Not to mention, he has playoff experience and he knows what it takes to win. A player like Millsap is what the Nuggets desperately need in order to make the playoffs (and to possibly make a run). The Nuggets still lack a winning mentality. Some games the Nuggets will play team basketball, but it is often not consistent enough to win night after night. The Nuggets sometimes turn to isolation basketball, which completely destroys their contiguity.
Hopefully the Nuggets are able to acquire a fairly big name before the trade deadline. Someone that can come in and contribute right away. The Nuggets should do everything they can this season in order to make the playoffs, which will be a huge stepping stone for this young team. It starts with adding a known scorer and maybe a few “glue guys” that can keep this team playing together as a unit.
