After a disappointing loss in San Antonio, the Nuggets came back home to the Mile High City hungry for a win, and a win is exactly what they found. The Nuggets got a big home win, 110-87, snapping the Dallas Mavericks 4 game winning streak and solidifying their hold on the eighth seed in the Western Conference.
In the absence of three of our starters, Will Barton took full advantage of the minutes he received as he led all scorers with 31 points (a season high and one point short of his career high), 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Gary Harris followed Barton’s lead with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. Wilson Chandler also received a double-double tonight off of his 14 points and 10 rebounds in 40 minutes. Rookies Jamal Murray and Juancho Hernangomez both had 7 points in their combined 37 minutes and Malik Beasley dropped 4 points in his 2 minutes.
The Nuggets started off tonight with a hot hand and outscored the Mavs 29-24 in the first and then continued to dominate in the second as they outscore Dallas 30-13. Talk about defense, right? At the half, the Nuggets led 59-37. In the third, the Nuggets were outscored by the Mavs 30-23, but that wasn’t enough to put a stop to the Nuggets. Cue the fourth quarter where the Nuggets powered back and outscored the Mavs 28-20 and took the 110-87 win. Holding a team to 87 points is the lowest we have held a team to this season.
Defense was the biggest reason for the Nuggets big win tonight–at one point, the Nuggets led by 27. Get this, because the Nuggets were cutting the Mavs off and forcing them to take perimeter shots, Dallas only had 10 paint points in the first quarter. It’s been said time and time again and it will continue to be said: Offense wins games, defense wins championships.
We’ve been waiting for a game like this for a long time.” -Coach Malone
