Before we get to the rankings, we need to go over how we came to our decision. This week, I (@kainzd) am joined by Mallorie Salazar (@MallorieSalazar) and Derek Perez (@NoCoMotive) for the rankings. Without further ado, here are Dig In Denver’s Week 16 NBA Power Rankings
**Team records include all games through Monday, February 13th**
1. Golden State Warriors (Last week: 1)
Derek: The Warriors retain the top spot again this week, even after their demolishing in Denver on Monday night. The Warriors were without one starter (Thompson), but the Nuggets were very banged up as well.
2. San Antonio Spurs (Last week: 2)
Derek: The Spurs fell to the Knicks over the weekend, and are only 6-4 in their last 10 – which isn’t very Spurs-like. Have no fear, they’ll right the ship and get things going again shortly.
3. Cleveland Cavaliers (Last week: 3)
Derek: The Cavs have played well of late, going 7-3 in their last 10. LeBron may still be looking for play-makers, but this team is still really good.
4. Houston Rockets (Last week: 4)
Derek: The Rockets are still scoring a a very high rate (2nd in the league in points per game), and are still sitting comfortably at 3rd in the West.
5. Boston Celtics (Last week: 5)
Derek: The Celtics are as hot as anyone, going 9-1 in their last 10 games. They aren’t relying as much on Isaiah Thomas solely, which bodes well for their playoff hopes.
6. Utah Jazz (Last week: 6)
Mallorie: The Jazz continue to make noise and it isn’t over yet, as they hold the 5th seed in the Western Conference. I don’t foresee them backing down anytime soon.
7. Memphis Grizzlies (Last week: 7)
Mallorie: The Grizzlies are the Grizzlies. They’re a team that continues to improve as the season continues and will continue to fight to take over the Jazz for 5th out West.
8. Washington Wizards (Last week: 8)
Mallorie: Washington has won their last 4 games and are 9-1 in their last 10. Their play has continued to be great following behind their leader John Wall.
9. Los Angeles Clippers (Last week: 11)
Mallorie: Without CP3, the Clippers continue to really struggle at PG. I can’t imagine how impatient they are awaiting his return to the court.
10. Atlanta Hawks (Last week: 10)
Derek: The Hawks held on in OT against the Trail Blazers on Monday night, pushing the Blazers another full game back of the Nuggets.
11. Toronto Raptors (Last week: 9)
Mallorie: The Raptors are currently tied for 4th in the Eastern Conference with the Hawks. Toronto is 4-6 in their last 10 and lost 2 straight.
12. Oklahoma City Thunder (Last week: 11)
Derek: The Thunder have lost 2 straight games. They lost in KD‘s return to OKC on Saturday night in an emotional game and then got smashed in Washington on Monday night. They are 4-6 in their last 10.
13. Indiana Pacers (Last week: 12)
Derek: The Pacers continue to stick in the 6th seed in the Eastern conference, safely in the playoffs but not quite in the top half of the conference.
14. Denver Nuggets (Last week: 14)
Mallorie: A HUGE win over the Golden State Warriors has really proven how hard the Nuggets are willing to work and how hard they’re willing to fight to make it to the playoffs this year. Don’t look down on this team, they’re going to be doing BIG things, especially following the trade that brought Mason Plumlee to the Mile High City. Denver is currently 5-5 in their last 10.
15. Chicago Bulls (Last week: 15)
Derek: The Bulls seem to be teetering back and forth on whether to do a full scale rebuild or stick with the core of Butler/Wade for a couple more years.
16. Detroit Pistons (Last week: 17)
Derek: The mediocre play from the Pistons continues. They are 5-5 in their last 10 and look at times to have found some consistency only to lose it a couple games later.
17. Charlotte Hornets (Last week: 16)
Mallorie: The once promising Hornets have fallen to 10th in the Eastern Conference and have lost their last 3 games. They have a record of 1-9 in their last 10. If they don’t pick up their play, they’ll end up being right in front of the last in the league Brooklyn Nets.
18. Portland Trail Blazers (Last week: 18)
Mallorie: Portland is sitting 2 games behind the 8th seeded Nuggets and are 5-5 in their last 10. They’re looking to try and continue to take over the 8th seed in the West after acquiring Jusuf Nurkic in a deal from Denver.
19. Milwaukee Bucks (Last week: 19)
Mallorie: The Bucks are 3-7 in their last 10, winning their last 2 but don’t count them out. They are still fighting to get back into the race to 8th in the East.
20. Miami Heat (Last week: 21)
Mallorie: The Heat have lost their last 2, but are still 8-2 in their last 10. Still pretty solid from where they were last week at 10-0 in their last 10.
21. New York Knicks (Last week: 20)
Derek: The Knicks are 3-7 in their last 10 and Nikola Jokic lit them up for 40 in the Garden last week.
22. Dallas Mavericks (Last week: 23)
Derek: Since inserting Seth Curry into the starting lineup, the Mavs are 11-5.
23. New Orleans Pelicans (Last week: 25)
Derek: The Pelicans have shown (some) signs of life recently, as they are only 3.5 games behind Denver for the 8th spot in the West.
24. Philadelphia 76ers (Last week: 22)
Mallorie: Trade rumors continue to swirl around Jahlil Okafor. What does the future hold for this team?
25. Minnesota Timberwolves (Last week: 24)
Derek: The Wolves are still a fun team to watch with their young talent. Most people thought Thibs’ defensive approach would sink in faster than it has in Minnesota.
26. Sacramento Kings (Last week: 26)
Derek: Reports out today say the Kings aren’t shopping DeMarcus Cousins.
27. Orlando Magic (Last week: 27)
Mallorie: The Magic are 14th in the East ahead of Brooklyn. Do they continue to plan for a future without Serge Ibaka?
28. Los Angeles Lakers (Last week: 28)
Mallorie: The Lakers are 15th in the West and they still show signs of inconsistency. They’ve only won 4 of their last 10 games.
29. Phoenix Suns (Last week: 29)
Mallorie: Again, inconsistency continues to show as a huge problem for the Suns, who are sitting dead last in the West with their 17-39 record.
30. Brooklyn Nets (Last week: 30)
Mallorie: There isn’t much to say here. The Nets are 0-10 in their last 10 games and have lost 13 in a row.
