Well, tonight on the second game of a three game home stand, the Nuggets were able to top the Clippers, win the season series 3-1, and, for the first time this season, win four games in a row.
Did we forget to mention that Will the Thrill Barton got a new career high with 35 points and that Nikola Joker
While the Clippers were missing two key players tonight, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, the Nuggets were also missing key players of their own. With Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, and Darrell Arthur out, Will Barton was sure to step up and play a solid game.
With his new career high 35 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists, Barton was able to lead the Nuggets off of the bench to their victory over the Clippers. The second leading scorer for the Nuggets was Gary Harris with a quiet 20 points, 2 boards, and 4 assists.
Nikola Jokic earned his 5th triple-double this season with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists. Mason Plumlee also gained his fifth double-double in a Nuggets uniform with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists.
“I thought we took advantage of having two bigs.” -Mason Plumlee
Kenneth Faried also returned after missing the last nine games and had a nice game with 12 points, 6 boards, and one nice dime for an alley-oop.
“It was exciting for me. I felt like a kid in a candy store.” -Kenneth Faried on his return
The Nuggets started tonight hot, hot, hot and were able to hold the Clippers to just 19 in the first, outscoring them 27-19. The Nuggets came back in the second to, one again, outscore LA, 32-27. At the half, Denver led LA by 13, 59-46. Coming back into the third, the Nuggets were able to continue scoring well, still outscoring the Clippers 44-34 (that’s the most the Nuggets have had in a quarter all season). In the fourth, the Clippers rallied but fell short as they took the 129-114 loss to the Denver Nuggets.
Tonight was the 21st time this season that the Nuggets were able to score 120 or more points. The Nuggets are 3rd best in the NBA at scoring 120+.
While the Nuggets were able to put up 129 points, defense was a disappointment, particularly in the second half where the Nuggets allowed 68 points from the Clippers. After taking many steps in the right direction for the defensive end, the Nuggets took two steps back tonight. Hopefully the defensive play of Denver will make a comeback before this tough stretch against Houston x2, Cleveland, and Indiana to name a few.
“It was a total team effort. We just came out and got what we needed.” -Will Barton
With tonight’s win over the Los Angeles Clippers, the Nuggets are just 2 games short of .500. We also keep the 8th seed and a two and a half game lead over the Portland Trail Blazers and a three and a half game lead over the Dallas Mavericks.
