The off-season is in full swing, and it has been a crazy year so far. With major players sporting new jerseys, and contracts with record breaking money, it’s easy to say its been fun being a NBA fan.
With the recent signing of Paul Millsap the Nuggets are one of the teams that put in work this off-season. But now with five power forwards on the roster its time for the Nuggets to look to shed some players, and add depth at other positions on the roster.
Trading for a Small Forward
With the sign & trade that sent Danilo Gallinari to the Los Angels Clippers the Nuggets have a hole at the SF position. Yes, Denver does have Wilson Chandler who should be getting the starting position next year. However, Denver needs to add a player that will be able to back up, or even add competition to start at the wing. Now the question comes to mind, what player should the Nuggets target?
Just like Rafel Torres who recently wrote and I totally agree with, that player should be Jae Crowder from the Boston Celtics. Crowder is an all around small forward who would be able to add versatility on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Last year he averaged 14 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1 steal a game. His defensive insects will tremendously help the Nuggets, which desperately need to improve on defense next season.
Just like the Nuggets who have a lot depth at PF position, the Celtics have depth at the SF position. With recent additions Gordon Hayward, Jayon Tatum, and drafting Jaylen Brown last year, it’s time for Boston to find a new home for Crowder to let their young players get some minutes in a crowded roster. What would Denver have give up to get the 27 year old?
Boston Celtics Send: Jae Crowder
This trade helps both teams, and Boston would get a draft pick in the second round to horde with the rest of their picks.
This is just one trade scenario that I think that would make sense for the Nuggets. With that being said, Denver needs to unload some players, and any salary dump at this point would help the Nuggets by unloading to get extra cap space or talent.
Adding a Small Forward in Free Agency
Another option the Nuggets could look at is adding a small forward in free agency. One player that Denver should target is Shabazz Muhammad. He’s only 24 years old, who would be a great spark to come off from the bench on the offensive side of the floor. Unfortunately he wouldn’t be able to add much for the defense. With good news coming on July 2nd with the T-Wolves pulling there qualifying offer it would be easy for Denver to sign the athletic small forward.
Shabazz averaged 10 points and close to 50% from the field a game. It would be a great signing for the Nuggets to add to an already impressive offense the Nuggets have.
