The Denver Nuggets will play the Lost Angles Lakers tonight for the second time this preseason. For many fans , this will be another intriguing game, as the team will continue to feel out its own rhythm. Many of the things that fans had questions about in the summer, are being answered and in a good way.
Although not ultra fluid or in sync, the offense looks like it’ll have the firepower needed to contend in the Western Conference. With many of the young stars on the team showing they’ll take the necessary steps forward for this young team.
Garry Harris is catching hype from around the league and for just cause. He was able to take a big leap last year, and through two pre-season games, has been able to look like he’ll do it again.
Garry caught fire and led this young Nuggets team to a win in their last meeting with the Lakers. He ended the night with a cool 25 points while hitting 8/11 field goals in just 21 minutes. In fact the whole Nuggets squad shot 46.6% from the field, which is what should happen when an unselfish Nuggets team is passing the ball so freely and looking for high percentage shots.
This team has the potential to amaze with their consistency this year, even in the division in which they play. Harris will be one of the biggest impacts. He leads by example with his high IQ, especially as it pertains to working off the ball and alongside Nikola Jokic. Harris was a plus 17 in the +/- field for the team last game, in fact the lowest Nugget was a +15 check this out:
Its true its only preseason and the Lakers while talented, shouldn’t be very good this year, however the Nuggets roster is still showing much improvement as it pertains to the eye test. Problem areas like defense, point guard play, and maturation of the young talent on the team, have taken notable steps forward, giving some affirmation to some of our inclinations as to what this team could be good at.
High motion high IQ players moving the ball, at times to a fault, provide open lanes and high percentage kick out threes. The Nuggets shot 51.7% from beyond the arc in the last meeting between these two team, led by Garry Harris who went 5/7 at the three.
The teams defensive energy and motion was also notably better. It was a much more of a in your face type of defense, and that led to some good turnovers helping convert easy buckets. With 5 players being reported to the injury report including Darrell Arthur, Paul Millsap, Garry Harris, Wilson Chandler and Nikola Jokic, all listed day-to-day, Nuggets Nation will get a good look at the young kets tonight, and some interesting lineups as well.
It’ll be interesting to see how the steadily improving, and much talked about Emmanuel Mudaiy will play tonight. The battler between him, and Jamal Murray has been somewhat even. although some believe that the arrow has shifted in favor of Mudiay, with his strong performance in the first preseason game vs the Warriors, where he went 6/10 from the field and 3/4 from behind the arc.
Mudiay has bolstered a shooting form that looks to have at least made some improvements in the offseason. If Emmanuel can finish at the rim, take are of the ball and make those around him better with his passing ability, he has a chance to solidify himself as the starting point guard of this team for the 2017-2018 season. However if he regresses and Jamal can catch fire as he so often does, the PG battle will continue to play out and leave Malone with some tough decisions to make come regular season.
Nuggets Nation will get to have some questions answered with the next 2 preseason games and see who will step up to the challenge to make this a competitive ball club in the west. Lets see who wants to come out and play tonight.
