Basketball is finally back but just long enough for the coaches and staff to evaluate the new young guns. Tonight the Denver Nuggets took on the Minnesota Timberwolves with a bad taste in their mouth from the final game last season. Tonight’s starting lineup included Monte Morris, Malik Beasley, Emmanuel Terry, Tyler Lydon, and Thomas Welsh.
Malik Beasley was hot the first half but cooled down during the second. He was very vocal tonight as he was trying to carve out a leadership among the first year players. Beasley also worked very well alongside Morris tonight as they were very complimentary to each other. He finished tonight’s game with 10 points, 3 assists and 5 rebounds while also grabbing a block and a steal. Beasley did struggle with the ball tonight committing 5 turnovers.

Tonight was a big night for Monte Morris as he was a big asset towards the win. He was his usually self attacking the basket at high speeds and controlling the ball well while delivering nice assists. Morris really wants that vacant backup point guard role but it all depends on his summer league play. this was only one game but so far he is doing a pretty good job. He finished the night with 15 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds.

A player I personally have been excited for stepped up tonight proving his worth to the team and that player is Vlatko Cancar. Like Morris, he too is looking for a larger role with the Nuggets and I am in full support for him. He needs some improvement on his athleticism but he’s very smart with the ball offensively. After tonight’s win Cancar finished with 11 points, 1 assist and 4 rebounds.
This Summer League looked good tonight but slipped in the fourth quarter making it a narrow victory even though they were up by twenty at one point. The Nuggets will continue their summer schedule against the Boston Celtics tomorrow night at 9pm MST on NBATV.
